We had a fun time answering these questions! This is a rare interview with the lovely Smokin’ Shannon of The Canna Chronicles in March of 2012.
When I sought to learn more about Gage Green Group, I came upon an open letter from the breeder, Keyplay, on their website (http://www.gagegreen.org). “Greetings from Gage Green 2012” immediately let me know that these people had something unique about them. They were like-minded people who believed in what they were doing. They were seeking to make the world a better place through cannabis breeding. In a time when corporate greed and making a quick profit seems to have a hand in everything, Gage Green Group is in pursuit of a higher calling.
The greeting goes on to say, “This year happens to be very important for our family and communities around the world… I believe people throughout the world must begin to love themselves, come together to unite, and love each other. Imagine.” This statement in the Gage Green greeting made it personal and touched me in many ways. “Changes are taking place at in the Gage Green Gardens to improve what we do in the labs and we are stepping up our efforts to consistently bring the highest quality you and medical cannabis patients everywhere expect.”
These breeders not only have the business aspect down, but they also have an inspiring view of life, people, and the world.
The next part of the site I traveled to was in the forums titled, “Give us feedback & help improve GGG.” Gage Green Group openly seeks all types of feedback, allowing everyone to be a part of making better products. “I really trust you guys with this breeding game,” read one of the responses. Everybody in the community was open and the Group was open to improving their work. This shows that Gage Green focuses on helping the people. They provide services specifically to improve people’s experiences and they care about their clients.
I am very impressed with Gage Green’s ethical code. They combine creativity with empathy to create successful outcomes.
Gage Green Genetics cultivates and hand-selects each cannabis seed with passion and care. Discovering champion genetics is their natural breeding techniques creates prized and potent strains with exceptional germination rates. Offering both inbred lines of select varieties and F1 hybrids of the finest cuts show both advanced vigor and medicinal potency. (Quoted from GageGreen.org)
Gage Green Groups’ natural technique produces each cannabis seed in a pristine environment using the most advanced techniques incorporating natural and organic methods. Their plants are grown in organically based super soil composed of the highest quality ingredients and handled by their highly skilled growers with the utmost care and techniques. Each individual plant develops to its fullest potential before pollination to make the best seeds possible.
Gage Green Group uses the best genetics from all over the world. They are testing and working with seeds from Colombia all the way to Afganistan, from Hawaii all the way to Africa. They also source rare cuts to create some of the best hybrids in the industry. Results from other patients are showing fantastic results from their seeds.
They also avoid “selfing” or “feminizing” seeds because they often involve chemically induced processes and increase the chance for certain unwanted traits to appear. Finding out their method on avoid feminizing seeds because of chemically induced processes, says once again, that Gage Green lives by its beliefs. Natural processes allow safer products for their patients. The group’s natural technique and advanced growing environment provide the basis for producing healthy and vibrant cannabis seeds.
Most of Gage Green Genetics are F1 Hybrids. This classifies all the first generation crosses between different cannabis strains. The F1 hybrids create a chance for patients to get a variation of the characteristics from two champion cannabis parents. These give patients a chance to get something unique and extremely special that is unique. Their Inbred Lines mainly focus on preserving the genetic pool and creating uniform phenotypes. Phenotypes (from Greek phainein, ‘to show’ + typos, ‘type’), for people who are not aware of the definition, “is the composite of an organism’s observable characteristics or traits: such as its morphology, development, biochemical or physiological properties, phenology, behavior, and products of behavior.” Gage Green has worked on Inbred Lines for many of their favorite genetics like the Grape Stomper, Inferno Haze, Colombian Black, Willie Nelson, and many more.
We have discovered that love for others is an important idea that Gage Green Group has incorporated to inspire their medicinal genius and help their clients. They produce with creativity and feelings. They release each hybrid in limited amounts, not to flood the industry. They genuinely take their time to answer patients’ feedback in order to make the best quality product. Their strains arise with the best techniques incorporating natural and organic methods.
In all honesty, what more could you ask for in a business morally, ethically, and medicinally? Perhaps an interview will help you see more of Gage Green Group’s positive qualities. I will be interviewing Keyplay and m4k from the Gage Green Group, a not only educated beyond belief, but a genuinely a down to earth man of peace and love for his and the groups passion for helping people. So here we go!!!!
The first thing I read was “Greetings from Gage Green 2012.” This was enough to let me know that working with this company was not only about corporate greed and quick profit.. This group of like-minded people are genuine helpers of people. They are in pursuit of true excellence and customer satisfaction.
Business owners that have not only the business aspect down, but also have a valued view on life, people, and the world. The greeting goes to say, “This year happens to be very important for our family and communities around the world for many reasons. Changes are taking place in the world around us overnight and we see many challenges ahead. I believe, people throughout the world must begin to love themselves, come together to unite, and love each other. “Imagine.” With this statement, the Gage Green greeting made it personal, and touched me in many ways. Changes are also taking place at in the Gage Green Gardens to improve what we do in the labs and we are stepping up our efforts to consistently bring the highest quality you and medical cannabis patients everywhere expect.”
The next part of Gage Green’s site I went to was titled,” Give us feedback & help improve GGG!” by m4K. He starts out by stating that they are making a thread for everybody who wishes to help them improve. The group is looking for feedback positive or negative from people, allowing everyone to be a part in the making of better products.” I really trust you guys, with this breeding game,” was one of the responses that I read. It sounds as if everyone is open in this forum, and M4K was open to feedback, whether it is positive or negative. This displays that Gage Green is for the people. They create services specifically for people, and most importantly care about their clients.
This information is directly quoted from Gage Green themselves about their knowledge of creating variations of strains that help vigor and medicinal potency. I am very impressed with their ethical code. Creativity and empathy combined is what makes Gage Green’s successful outcomes. Gage Green Genetics cultivates and hand-selects each cannabis seed with passion and care. Discovering champion genetics is their natural breeding techniques creates prized and potent strains with exceptional germination rates. A phenotype (from Greek phainein, ‘to show’ + typos, ‘type’) is the composite of an organism’s observable characteristics or traits: such as its morphology, development, biochemical or physiological properties, phenology, behavior, and products of behavior. Phenotypes result from the expression of an organism’s genes as well as the influence of environmental factors and the interactions between the two. Gage Green is known for preserving these in certain cuts. Gage Green has worked on Inbred Lines for many of their favorite genetics. They avoid “selfing” or “feminizing” seeds because they often involve chemically induced processes and increase the chance for certain recessive traits to appear. Therefore, we have covered that Gage Green believes that love for others and loving yourself are the values that they have incorporated to create their medicinal genius for the help of their clients. They produce from feelings, not producing to monopolize the industry. They genuinely take their time and reviewers feedback in order to make the best quality product. Their strains are made by advanced techniques incorporating natural and organic methods. In all honesty, what more could you ask for in a business morally, ethically, and medicinally? I will be interviewing m4K from the Gage Green Group, a not only educated beyond belief, but a genuinely a down to earth man of peace and love for his and the groups passion for helping people. So here we go!!!!
- What inspired you to become a breeder? What ignites your passion?
Keyplay: When I first started growing full time, I was not sure I wanted to be doing what I am doing now. I started my library of work with a few very wonderful Bay Area cuts. I needed some fresh genetics, so my good friend, Jojorizo, who also needed some space, gave me a vanload of plants, clones, and seedlings to work with. Jo, a reputable breeder in the Bay Area, told me, “Breeding is where the rewards are, friend. You will discover much about yourself and the plant. It is a lot of work but I know you will be good at it.” I decided to take on the challenge.
That season was backbreaking and I lost 35% of the entire crop with rain, caterpillars, mildew, and mites. With all the work and cataloguing necessary, I became overworked and began to think I should have never accepted Jo’s gifts. These were, however, gifted by the creator and Jo was a supportive mentor who never placed any pressure on me. He often told me I was on the right track and encouraged me even though I did not feel completely able. In the end, I was patient and believed in the work and in myself. That year that led to the creation of the Grape Stomper, Blackberry Pie, and Mendo Montage, to name a few.
m4k: Keyplay had been breeding and testing genetics for years before we put together the Group. When I first met him, I knew instantly that this man was different from the rest. Not only did he have the best quality buds and genetics, but he also had a passion for the plant that distinguished him.
I am passionate about everything we are doing at GGG. We do everything based on what we believe to represent the cannabis best. Our work seeks to improve people’s lives.
By breeding with champion parentage, we aim to provide the best combinations of high-end cannabis genes in our seeds. Our seeds produce phenotypes people have never seen before. This gets me excited to wake up every morning. Every seed created in the Gage Green Gardens has a chance to be something extraordinary.
- Since you are vehemently focused on the medicinal aspect and the care of your clients, have you had people who you have gotten close to that were helped by your product?
Keyplay: Absolutely! From the very beginning, we have totally committed ourselves to the medical aspects of cannabis. We, at Gage Green Group, are the patients who use our products to sleep and eat. Our conditions are very real and life threatening. We know that Gage Green Group has the strains patients need to receive a real sense of well-being.
I am a Hepatitis C patient and I am able to feel all the toxins and poisons in my immediate environment. I have a sharp sense for what I put into my body, from the air I breathe to the foods, drinks, and medicines I ingest. Recently became extremely sick over the 2011 holidays with toxins and viruses attacking my body. I called on a trusted ally, organic versions of Grape Stomper, LA Mist, and, a new strain, Purple Elegance to: relieve the immediate pain caused by my convulsing stomach, provide appetite and calm my nausea so I could retain water for hydration and broth for nourishment, and to aid with sleep and rest.
It is definitely good enough for whom it is for. It helped me through a very tough period. A craftsman’s blessing.
m4k: I am also a medicinal cannabis patient and benefit from the anti-inflammatory and pain-relief qualities.
Besides using the medicine ourselves, we work with other individuals who medicate with cannabis for various illnesses. Our seeds have produced very effective medicine for many patients. We are always happy to be able to help patients who can benefit most from our product. The range of effects from the various hybrids we provide allow a patient to find the perfect strain that is suitable for his or her own needs.
When we breed, we only breed with effective medicine. We work with some of the most beautiful strains in the world. Cannabis strains, or phenotypes, have to have character, in all its elements: look, smell, taste, growth preferences, and, most importantly, medicinal effect. If a strain does have a strong medicinal effect that satisfies our standards, we will not work with it.
- Your website forum is very open about your breeding and growing trials. It is not a bad asset, but why such a high degree of transparency?
Keyplay: Because we see the bigger picture, our mission is to make a difference in peoples’ lives. We will do everything humanly possible to make our products shine brighter than others will. In addition, we seek to serve our clients and patients rather than asking them to serve us. We treat others the way we want to be treated.
m4k: I completely agree. Our goal is to create a group that is solely dedicated to promoting everything that is good about cannabis through our seeds and through our actions. We only aim for the highest standards and methods without compromising quality at any point in our process
By being completely open and transparent, we hope to establish trust between Gage Green Group and the patients who use our genetics. Patients should know what they are getting and we hope that our openness will foster a deeper sense of community and accountability. Everything we do should be verifiable and patients should have an input at every step of the way. We want to provide an outlet where growers can work together to help enhance the cannabis plant and community as we know it.
- I read your take on feminized seeds, and understand your train of thinking about keeping products free of chemicals. What do you think about auto flowering types?
Keyplay: I have nothing against anything that works for someone whether they are using it for self-enlightenment or personal fulfillment. However, auto-flowers are not our medium and will not be for a while. I can understand the benefits and needs associated with its harvest time, the little space required, and the stealth qualities. These draw a solid audience for auto-flower genetics.
We are primarily focusing, however, on Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and their hybrids. Currently, I am not a big fan of Cannabis Ruderalis. I have worked with several elite mixes and they were all failures in the taste, time to harvest, and quality of effect. So far, I have not found any Ruderalis to be up to our standards.
m4k: Auto-flower genetics have a long way to go before becoming on par with the strains that we are currently working with. Our patients seek the highest medicinal value from our seeds and we cannot offer that with Ruderalis at this moment.
- Do you see the seed industry for medicinal marijuana making headway, or do you personally feel that laws being passed are destroying the industry?
m4k: While there are many people out there doing good work for the movement, I feel like true change is far away. Too many people benefit from keeping cannabis illegal for me to believe that marijuana users will be safe from prosecution in the near future.
What I fear is that cannabis will follow the same path as the Coca plant or Opium or Alcohol. The evil ones eradicated these natural plants by outlawing them. Then, they turned around and approved licenses for pharmaceutical companies to produce synthetic versions of these plants and sell it to the masses. We must prevent this from happening to cannabis.
Keyplay: If you open up your eyes, the way you perceived things to be, and the things they told you to accept, will appear for what they truly are. As you begin to wake up to what is going on, you will ask yourself, “Why do these politicians want to impose certain laws upon us and what will be the law’s effect on our world, both present and future?” If everybody reflects on this, we will realize that the time to take action is now.
Everybody seriously needs to awaken in order to hear the calling to move forward as one. It is time say, “No more anger and fear. I commit to changing my world with love and respect for all living things.”
- What are your long-term goals for Gage Green Genetics?
Keyplay: We have many long-term goals. We are beginning to compete and expose our work to more people around the world. The work we do speaks for itself and we want people to have a chance to experience it. We want to meet people around the world who benefit from this plant and give them a hug or smile, too. Compare notes with other growers and breeders and say, “Thanks!” There is always so much to attend to and we are trying to survive without all the hoopla that comes with it.
It would be wonderful to get the opportunity to work with a few prolific people whose work we admire. Establishing a closer knit and supportive community with people who appreciate our goals and can share and contribute to our vision has always been one of my personal goals. We gravitate towards individuals who have a strong sense of spirituality or people who are conscious in these changing times.
- What do you see or feel that the marijuana movement is heading in the next five years in the United States, and around the world?
Keyplay: What most people do not realize is that cannabis is a deeply powerful plant in the spiritual sense. The power held by our sacred plant is bad for the business of those in charge. It heals and it allows us to see within and without. Everyone who can think knows how problematic marijuana prohibition has been to our society. We each have a duty to become our own cannabis movement. Tell someone in charge exactly why their agenda will not be tolerated by you, a free human being. Wake up and show the lawmakers that you see past their façade and demand change by leading those around you.
We use a mantra that goes, “Love yourself and love others for truly remarkable change. We are one.”
- What is your website information, and how can you join the Gage Green Group forum that you provide? People will enjoy your site, and I want everyone to experience what I have experienced by your articles.
m4k: Our website is http://www.gagegreen.org. Our forum is comprised of a group of like-minded growers seeking and working each day to expand the potential of cannabis. Some of the best growers come together to share their experiences and make each other better. We post pictures and detailed test grows on our parents and provide the most updated news on our Twitter (@GageGreen) and Facebook (Like Gage Green Group).
